In the marriage customs, the betrothal starts immediately after the proposal of a marriage has been accepted by both families. First both sets of parents exchanged family credentials as tokens of intentions. Then, after extensive bargaining, the two families would arrive at the amount of money and goods that would make up the gift to the girl’s family.
In present practice, most of the expenses are shared between the couples. As such, the bargaining normally comes between the couples with their parents instead of a negotiation between 2 families.
The boy’s family presented betrothal gifts of money and signigicant items such as tea, “Dragon (male) and Phoenix (female)” cakes, candles, roast pig, etc…
The girl’s family reciprocated with gifts of food and clothing.
However in recent days, some of these products cannot be found in the market and realistic overwhelms traditions.

~The stuff we prepared to reciprocated the family.
It is customary for the girl’s family to distribute the bridal cakes they received from the boy’s family to friends and relatives as a form of announcement and invitation to the wedding feast. The number of cakes given to each was established according to a rigid etiquette, on the basis of seniority and degree of intimacy. Those who received the cakes, were expected to present congratulatory gifts to the girl’s parent. Away from tradition, we cater kedai kueh kueh’s signature nanut cake as the bridal cakes and of course, it was delivered to us.
